VOYAGE (FRANCE)

Voyage were a French disco band featuring a British woman, Sylvia Mason-James, on lead vocals. Before forming Voyage, a number of the band members were in a group called V.I.P. Connection who released at least 1 single. They would also work as session musicians for acts such as Manu Dibango, Cerrone and Johnny Hallyday. Their debut album, simply called ‘Voyage’, would peak at 59 in the UK and 40 in the US and would include the hit ‘Scotch Machine’, which made it to 13 in the UK, although it was renamed ‘Scots Machine’ to avoid offending the Scottish. The song would top the US Dance charts, but not make the Hot 100. They did manage a Hot 100 hit with ‘Souvenirs’ which went to 41. In total they saw 3 UK hits, but neither of the 2 subsequent hits fared better than ‘Scots Machine’. Band member Sauveur Mallia would go on to work on film sound tracks including 1987’s ‘Moonstruck’ which starred Cher and 1999’s ‘Breakfast Of Champions’ which starred Bruce Willis. Mason-James would work with Wham!, The Blow Monkeys and Go West, to name a few.
