The song started life as one called ‘This Old House’ which had the same chords but a different melody and lyrics. Seger developed on the chord structure to create ‘We’ve Got Tonite’. For the new lyrics, he was inspired by a scene between Robert Redford and Dimitra Arliss in the film ‘The Sting’. In 1982, a live version of the song was released as a single which went to 60 in the UK. Some pressings of the single note the artist as Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, but the South African one just notes Bob Seger. In 1983, Kenny Rogers would team up with Sheena Easton to release a cover version. That would go to 6 in the US and 28 in the UK as well as topping the Country Singles charts in both the US and Canada. It would also see some success on the local radio stations getting to 2 on the Radio 5 ones and 8 on Capital 604. In 2002 Ronan Keating would see his duet version with Lulu reach 4 in the UK.
