Born: 7 November 1954
Beck was born in Brooklyn in New York and started her music career singing backing vocals for the likes of Melissa Manchester and Chaka Khan. She released her first album called ‘Sweet Talk’ in 1979. This featured Irene Cara and Luther Vandross on backing vocals although neither artist was well known at the time. Beck would then have to wait 10 years before her next album. In the meantime she would record jingles. Her big break came with ‘First Time’ which was used for a Coca Cola advert. It would top the UK charts for 3 weeks and also go to number 1 in Australia, Germany, Norway and Switzerland. However, she would not manage to make the US Hot 100 charts. She would see 1 other song make the UK charts in the form of ‘Save Up All Your Tears’ (#84). In 2006 a remix of ‘First Time’ credited to Sunblock ft Robin Beck would make it to 9 on the UK charts.
