Benatar was born in Brooklyn in New York. Her father was of Polish descent. She began singing while still at school and planned to go to the famous Juilliard music school but ended up at Stony Brook University in New York. However, she dropped out to marry a guy called Dennis Benatar and she became a bank teller. She came to the notice of the record companies and was signed to Chrysalis records. Her first album, called ‘In The Heat Of The Night’ was produced by Mike Chapman and Chapman, along with his song writing partner Nicky Chinn, would write 3 tracks for the album. The album would slowly climb the US album charts, taking 22 weeks to get to its ultimate peak of 12. She would go on see 17 US Hot 100 hits with ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ and ‘We Belong’ sharing honours for best peak as both songs reached number 5. She was not as popular in the UK where she has only managed 9 hits with a best peak of 17 by ‘Love Is A Battlefield’.

I doubt she was born in 1983 – she’d have been 2 at the time of her first SA hit 🙂
Didn’t you know that she was a child prodigy 🙂
Okay, fixed it to 1953.
