The group started out in 1958 as the backing band for a singer called Stan Saxon although this was only Dave Clark and Rick Huxley who would go on to be in the Dave Clark Five. They eventually split from Saxon in 1962 and began to establish themselves in North London. They were hailed as London’s answer to the Mersey Beat Sound explosion that was happening at the time. They would see 21 UK chart hits with ‘Glad All Over’ giving them their only number 1. In the US they would manage 23 Hot 100 hits and topped the charts there with ‘Over And Over’. Clark (born 15 December 1939 in London) would also have a solo career seeing 8 UK chart hits including a number 50 hit with ‘What Was Her Name’ which was credited to Dave Clark Featuring Chicks On Speed. He would get to 34 with ‘Southside’, his highest peak as a solo artist.

The Dave Clark 5 were 1 of 12 acts who would see 2 songs chart that would also chart by another act. Only Trini Lopez of the 12 would see 3 such hits. ‘Everybody Knows’ was also a hit for Engelbert Humperdinck while ‘Everybody Get Together’ was a hit for The Youngbloods under the title ‘Get Together’.
