Born: 1951
Ellen was born in St Louis, Missouri. When she was 21 she left St Louis and moved to New York to study acting. She didn’t really find much success initially so started up a band called Big Jive and performed in Atlantic City. She then landed a part in the National Lampoon comedy show which was the springboard for actors such as Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray. There she met Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman and this would lead to her singing with Meat Loaf on his ‘Paradise By The Dashboard Light’. The video for the song starred Karla DeVito in the female part in the song, but she was lip synching. The collaboration with Meat Loaf led to Ellen working with the likes of Ian Hunter from Mott the Hoople, Mick Ronson (who had worked with David Bowie) and The Clash. She would see 1 US Hot 100 hit in the form of ‘What’s A Matter Baby’ which went to 92 while in the UK she saw ‘Night Out’ get to 68 and ‘Spirit Of St Louis’ reach 57. She would also end up having a successful career on Broadway and starred in a number of films such as ‘Tootsie’, ‘Fatal Attraction’ and ‘Cocktail’. Some may remember her from the TV comedy show ‘Night Court’.
