IMAGINATION (UK)

The bands origins go back to a meeting between Leee (yes, 3 ‘e’s) John and Ashley Ingram. John had been doing backing vocals for The Delfonics, Chairmen of The Board, The Elgins and The Velvettes. Ingram and John formed a songwriting partnership. They joined a band called Fizzz, but that did not last long and so they auditioned for another band called Midnight Express. Here they met Jamaican born Errol Kennedy. The 3 recorded a demo of ‘Body Talk’ and sent it to the production team of Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. Swain & Jolley would produce the likes of Bananarama, Joe Dolan and Spandau Ballet. The demo went under the band name Imagination, choosing the name as a tribute to John Lennon. Swain & Jolley took them on and ‘Body Talk’ would go to number 4 in the UK. They would go on to see a total of 17 UK hits with ‘Just An Illusion’ giving them a best peak of 2. They would not make the main US charts but did see 6 songs make the US Dance charts (including a number 1 with 1988’s ‘Instinctual’) and 7 make the US R&B charts.
