Born 12 September 1931
Died: 26 April 2013 (aged 81)
Real name: George Glen Jones
Jones was born in Saratoga in Texas. His father was a shipyard worker but also played the harmonica and guitar while his mother played piano. George would get his first guitar when he was 9 and would have to sing for his father and his father’s friends when they would come over late at night and were drunk and abusive. He left home when he was 16 and got a job singing and playing on local radio stations. He released his fist single in 1954 and this was ‘No Money In The Deal’ which he wrote. However, he had to wait till the following year to see his first success when ‘Why Baby Why’ went to number 4 on the US Country Singles charts. His first number 1 on the Country Singles Charts, 1959’s ‘White Lightning’, was also his first breakthrough into the main Hot 100 where it peaked at 73. He has seen 144 Country Singles hits in the US to date with 10 of them going to number 1. Of his 144 hits, 7 made the main Hot 100, but he would not see a better peak than the 73 that ‘White Lightning’ managed.
