LOVIN’ SPOONFUL (US)

The Lovin’ Spoonful started life in Greenwich Village in New York around 1964. It was formed by John B. Sebastian. He recruited Zal Yanovsky who had been in a band called The Mugwumps which featured future Mamas and Papas members Mama Cass and Denny Doherty. The Lovin’ Spoonful’s first gig was at a club called The Night Owl and was apparently so bad that the club owner told them to go away and practice. This they did as soon began to get noticed. They were about to sign with Elektra records when another label, Karma Sutra, exercised a previous option over the band to sign them. Their first release, ‘Do You Believe In Magic’ went to number 9 on the Hot 100 and they would go on to score 14 US hits with ‘Summer In The City’ giving them a solitary number 1 hit. They managed 5 UK chart hits with ‘Daydream’ giving them a best peak of 2.
