THE MOVE (UK)

The band came together in Birmingham, England in 1965 and formed around Trevor Burton, Ace Kefford and Roy Wood. They were soon joined by Carl Wayne and Bev Bevan and began to build up a reputation, largely because their manager, a guy called Tony Secunda, would arrange a number of publicity stunts, getting them to perform outrageous antics on stage like taking an axe to a television and when they signed a contract with Denny Cordell for him to produce their work, the contracts were sign on the back of a topless model. Secunda did, however, encourage Roy Wood to start writing songs and their first single was ‘Night Of Fear’, a Wood composition, and it went to number 2 in the UK. The antics of Secunda eventually cost the band dearly when, without consulting them, he produced a cartoon postcard showing the then Prime Minister of the UK, Harold Wilson, in bed with his secretary. This was used to promote the single ‘Flowers In The Rain’. Wilson sued and the band lost all royalties to the song in the case. The band subsequently fired Secunda but continued to see chart success. Around the time of their second album, Wood started talking about a side project performing orchestral rock and Carl Wayne left the band after witnessing Wood in a fight with a drunken audience member. Wayne was replaced by Jeff Lynne and this would ultimately lead to the formation of ELO, the realisation of Wood’s orchestral rock project. As ELO’s career started to flourish, The Move’s came to an end. They had seen 11 UK chart hits with ‘Blackberry Way’ being their only number 1. They only saw 1 minor US hit in the form of ‘Do Ya’ which made it to 93 on the Hot 100. Wood would work with ELO for a while before going on to form the band Wizzard.

As Jeff Lynne was not a member of The Move when they had their SA chart, the ELO hits have not been reflected as part of the band’s chart involvement.
