COZY POWELL (UK)

Born: 29 December 1947
Died: 5 April 1998 (aged 50)
Real name: Colin Trevor Flooks

Powell was born in the town of Cirencester which is about halfway between Swindon and Gloucester in England. He would never meet his birth parents and was adopted as a baby. He would start playing drums while still at school and joined a group called the Corals. The Corals would apparently set the world record for continuously playing in 1966. Powell would take on the nickname Cozy after the jazz drummer Cozy Cole. After The Corals, he joined a band called The Sorcerers and they began to get known in the Birmingham area where he would mix with the likes of Robert Plant and John Bonham (later to become famous as part of Led Zeppelin) as well as Slade’s Noddy Holder and pre-Black Sabbath Tony Iommi. In 1970 he landed a job with The Jeff Beck Group and was with them for a couple of albums before releasing some solo stuff. He saw his first UK hit in 1973 with ‘Dance With The Devil’ which went to number 3. There would be 4 further UK hits for him, including 1993’s ‘Resurrection’ which was attributed to Brian May with Cozy Powell. He would go on to work with bands such as Rainbow, The Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath. In 1998 he died in a car crash racing to visit a married woman he was having an affair with. He was over the legal limit, not wearing a seatbelt and travelling at about 170km/h when he lost control of the car.

Tra le sue hit più famose del ’73 e’ “Dance with the devil” e del 1993 “Resurrection” nell’album “Back to the light” eseguito assieme a Bryan May.
