Full name: Edward Thomas Rabbitt
Rabbitt was born in Brooklyn in New York. His father, who worked on an oil refinery, was skilled in playing the fiddle and accordion. Rabbitt learnt to play guitar by the time he was 12 and as a youngster he become very knowledgeable in country music. After leaving school he worked as an attendant at a mental hospital but would also perform at a local club. He would win a talent competition where the prize was having one of his live shows broadcast on the radio. In 1964 he signed to 20th Century Records and released his first single, ‘Six Nights And Seven Days’. It took four years and relocating to Nashville before he released his next single, ‘The Bed’, but still no success. However, the following year, Elvis Presley recorded his song ‘Kentucky Rain’ and further successes as a song writer followed. His first success as an artist was in 1974 when he saw ‘You Get To Me’ go to 34 on the US Country Singles charts. His first Hot 100 single came in 1976 with ‘Rocky Mountain Music’ which peaked at 76. He would go on to see 14 Hot 100 hits, hitting the top spot in 1980 with ‘I Love A Rainy Night’. He would only manage 3 UK hits with a best peak of 41 by ‘Every Which Way But Loose’ which was from the Clint Eastwood movie of the same name.
