The group was put together by Jacques Morali, who was also responsible for putting together The Village People. The initial line up consisted of Cassandra Ann Wooten, Gwendolyn Oliver and Cheryl Mason Jacks, so no Ritchie’s and no relatives. They took their name from record producer Richie Rome, adding a ‘t’ to the name. They found success immediately with their first hit, ‘Brazil’ going to 11 in the US and 41 in the UK. However, this would be their best peak on the main US chart with only 1 of their 2 subsequent Hot 100 hits making the top 20. However, they saw 11 hits make the US Dance charts with 3 of them topping those charts. In 1978, Wooten, Oliver and Jacks were sacked, much to their surprise and 3 new members were employed. Wooten and Jacks would go on to form a group called Cas Mijac and would sing backing vocals on John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s ‘Double Fantasy’ album.
