The Sutherland brothers were Gavin and Iain Sutherland who came from Aberdeenshire in Scotland. They started singing together in 1968. After putting out a single called ‘Smokie Blues Away’, they formed The Sutherland Brothers Band by adding Kim Ludman and Neil Hopwood to their line up. They would see a minor hit in Australia with ‘The Pie’ which went to 34 in 1972. Their follow up single was ‘Sailing’ which would bubble under the UK charts (apparently getting to number 54 when the charts were just a top 50). Three years later Rod Stewart would take a cover of the song to the top of the charts in at least 5 countries, one of which was the UK. In 1973 the Sutherland Brothers would team up with the group Quiver. Tim Renwick from the band, would go on to work with Al Stewart and Pink Floyd while Bruce Thomas would join Elvis Costello’s backing band, The Attractions. Before that happened, the combined group of Sutherland Brothers and Quiver would score 2 UK hits (‘Arms Of Mary’ (#5) and ‘Secrets’ (#35)) and 2 US hits (‘(I Don’t Want To Love You But) You Got Me Anyway’ (#48) and ‘Arms Of Mary’ (#84). After this, the Sutherland Brothers would revert to working as a duo and would score 1 further UK hit (‘Easy Come Easy Go’ (#50)).

Renwick would play on Frankie Miller’s album which included his hit ‘Darlin’ and a number of Quiver Members would play on Al Stewart’s ‘Year Of The Cat’ which included his SA Chart hit ‘Sand In Your Shoes’ but I have not been able to verify that any of them played on these particular tracks. If they did, then the total chart involvement stats would be 4 hits and 59 weeks.
