THE VOGUES (US)

The band hailed from Turtle Creek in Pennsylvania and was formed in 1958 by students at Turtle Creek High School. They initially called themselves The Val-Aires. They were championed by a Pittsburgh DJ called Porky Chedwick who got them slots in shows with The Platters and The Drifters. They released one single as The Val-Aires, but after high school they went to the army or college. After this they got back together and renamed themselves The Vogues. They recorded a cover of Petula Clark’s hit ‘You’re The One’ and saw it go to number 4 on the US Hot 100. Their next hit was ‘Five O’Clock World’ which also went to number 4. They would see 12 further Hot 100 hits, but none would see a better peak than their first 2 hits managed.
