The song was originally recorded in 1940 by Leadbelly. It has also been recorded as ‘In Them Old Cottonfields Back Home’. Various others have covered it including Harry Belafonte, The New Christy Minstrels, The Seekers, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Petula Clarke. Daryl Dragon (aka Captain from Captain & Tennille) plays keyboards on the single version of the track (but not the album version). The single would be the last one The Beach Boys would release on Capitol records whom they had been with for 8 years. They moved to their own Brother Records label after that.
