The song was taken from the film ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ which starred Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine and Shelley Winters. It would win the Best Original Song Oscar award. The original lyric of the song was ‘Why must there be a morning after’ but the record label wanted the more positive ‘there’s got to be a morning after’. The version in the film was performed by the character Nonnie which was played by Carol Lynley, but the singing was actually done by Renee Armand. It was following the success of the film that Maureen McGovern recorded her version.
