The song took the melody of a Michael Holm song called ‘Tränen lügen nicht’ (Tears do not lie) and put Christmas themed English lyrics to it (by Fred Jay). Interestingly, although the song is regarded as a Christmas one, there is no specific reference to Christmas in the lyrics. Holm would record a version of the English lyrics as would Boney M. Some releases of Mathis hit would include ‘(Soleado)’ at the end of the title, but the South African pressing omits this.
