Apparently the song was offered to The Turtles who turned it down. It was first recorded by song writers, P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri (see Fantastic Baggys), who were really employed as song writers, not artist. They recorded the song and called themselves The Grass Roots as a reference to them being a grass roots project for their label. They then employed a band called The Bedouins to become The Grass Roots and recorded the song again with Bedouins lead singer, Bill Fulton recording a new lead vocal for the song. It was this version that charted in 1966. The song would be recorded a third time after Sloan and Barri fell out with The Bedouins and they brought in a band called 13th Floor to replace them. Lead singer of 13th Floor, Rob Grill, would record a new vocal for the track and that version would appear on the band’s 2nd album ‘Let’s Live For Today’.
