The song was the first of 18 hits to chart that noted Geoff Stephens as songwriter. It was originally recorded by session musicians, but the popularity of the song led to Stephens putting together an actual group. He would go on to pen the other 2 SA charting hits for the group along with hits for Herman’s Hermits, Scott Walker and Tom Jones amongst others. ‘Winchester Cathedral’ would be the top ranked of the 18 hits he wrote. The song would win the Grammy for Best Contemporary (R&R) Recording. In 2016, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the song, Stephens arranged a new recording of the track using members of thew Winchester Cathedral Choir.
