The song would give Preston his first solo number 1 in the US. He would see 1 further US chart topper in the form of 1974’s ‘Nothing From Nothing’. He had seen a US number 1 hit before where he got a separate credit on The Beatles’ 1969 hit ‘Get Back’. In 2009 Donny Osmond included a cover of ‘Will It Go Round In Circles’ on his ‘Love Songs Of The 70’s’ album.

BILLY PRESTON (US)

Born: 2 September 1946
Died: 6 June 2006 (aged 59)
Full name: William Everett Preston

Preston was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Los Angeles when he was small. Somewhat of a child prodigy, he taught himself how to play musical instruments and by the time he was 10 he was playing the organ for artists such as Mahalia Jackson and would appear on Nat King Cole’s television show when he was 11. He would join Little Richard’s band in 1962 and would travel with him to Hamburg where Preston would meet The Beatles. He would later hook up with them on their sessions for ‘Get Back’. He would get a separate credit on the ‘Get Back’ single which would top the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Soon after this he would sign to The Beatles’ Apple Record label and would see 17 Hot 100 hits in the US (apart from ‘Get Back’, he also saw ‘Will It Go Round In Circles’ and ‘Nothing From Nothing’ make it to number 1). He would only manage 5 UK hits and his best peak there outside of ‘Get Back’ was a number 2 hit with ‘With You I’m Born Again’ which he recorded with Syreeta.
