DONNY OSMOND (US)

Born: 9 December 1959
Full name: Donald Clark Osmond

Donny was born in the city of Ogden in Utah. He was the 7th son in the family and his brothers would perform together as The Osmond Brothers. They were spotted by Andy Williams’ father who recommended them to Andy. Although sceptical about having kids on his TV show, Andy invited them to perform on ‘The Andy Williams Show’ and they were so popular that they soon became regulars. Donny would join them when he was 5 year old and they would also occasionally be joined by their sister Marie. In the early 70’s Donny would start seeing success as a solo singer with his first hit being ‘Sweet And Innocent’ in 1971. It went to 7 in the US and he would follow it up with the US number 1 ‘Go Away Little Girl’. In total he would go on to see 23 US hits (this includes 7 with his sister Marie) but no further number 1’s. In the UK he would manage 13 hits with 3 going to number 1 (‘Puppy Love’, ‘The Twelfth Of Never’ and ‘Young Love’). He would also co-host ‘The Donny & Marie Show’ alongside his sister and in 1990 he would play Joseph in a production of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.

Of the 3 Osmond siblings that made our charts (Donny, Marie and Little Jimmy), Donny was the only one to see more than 1 hit. However, using a top 20 points basis he would finish 3rd of the 3 (second, above Marie if you use a top 30 points basis, but given all 3 of them had their whole careers during the top 20 era, this is probably not the right method to use). The group The Osmonds would not make our charts.
