It was now 3 weeks at 1 for Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough’ which had been relatively comfortable there for the past 2 weeks as the previous number 1, Suzi Quatro’s ‘She’s In Love With You’ sat at 2, but this week Quatro’s hit dropped to 4 while Exile’s ‘The Part Of Me That Needs You Most’ moved up to 2. Exile had already had 1 chart topper in the form of ‘Kiss You All Over’.

Nightmare’s ‘Great Balls of Fire’ took the climber of the week award with a 7 place jump from 19 to 12. A climb of 7 was the 3rd most popular to get you a biggest climber award with us having seen this 111 time. A 5 place climb was the second most popular (138 times) while a 6 place climb had been the climber of the week the most, occurring on 146 occasions.

Barbara Dickson’s ‘Caravan Song’ was the only other star rater this week. It moved up 5 from 13 to 8.

Two songs shared the faller of the week with The Dooley’s ‘Wanted’ and Abba’s ‘I Had A Dream’ both falling 5 to land at 20 and 15 respectively.

For a 6th week running Racey’s ‘Boy Oh Boy’ and Cliff Richard’s ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ were the oldest on the charts. They had been with us for 18 weeks in total and had shared their first week as the oldest with Jennifer Warnes’ ‘Don’t Make Me Over’.

Roy Bulkin’s ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone’ was the first of 2 songs to depart the chart. It had managed a run of just 3 weeks and a peak of 18 which was the worst performance of his 5 hits to date. There was still 1 more hit to come from him.

We also bid farewell to ELO’s ‘Confusion’. It managed a run of 10 weeks and a peak of 10, making it the 51st song to see an equal weeks and peak figure. It was the 6th time a song had managed a weeks count of 10 and a peak of 10.

The first new entry was a song which was first recorded by a band called Bruce Woolley & The Camera Club which featured Thomas Dolby on keyboards. ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ was written by Woolley alongside Geoff Downes (who was also in Yes and Asia) and Trevor Horn (who produced acts such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood and ABC as well as being a member of The Art Of Noise. Downes and Horn formed The Buggles who brought us the version of ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ which charted this week. The song would top the charts in Australia, Austria, France (shifting over 1 million units there), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. It would only make it to 40 in the US. It would also have the distinction of being the first song played on MTV when the music channel first started in August 1981.

Local band, Joy, brought us the second new entry in the shape of ‘Ain’t Gonna Stop (Till I Get to the Top)’, a song written by Patric van Blerk and Fransula Roos. It was an 8th hit as song writer for van Blerk who had brought us hits by Lincoln, Rabbitt and the Julian Laxton Band amongst others. For Roos it was only his second time as song writer. Joy were made up of Felicia Marion, Thoko Ndlozi and Anneline Malebo and they would support Dobie Gray and Leo Sayer when they performed in South Africa. They also accounted for the 6th time a band shared a name with a song title as we had seen Apollo 110 chart with a song called ‘Joy’ back in 1972

Kelly Marie saw her weeks total reach 40. She was the 93rd act to reach this total and the 14th woman to manage this.

Abba caught up with The Bee Gees for weeks in the charts and the 2 acts shared the top spot on the weeks count list with 203 each to their names. The Bee Gees had been the top act for 47 weeks which includes the week when they equalled Tom Jones and shared the top spot with him.

Further down the list we saw Boney M move into tied 15th place sharing the spot with Herman’s Hermits on 95 weeks.

On the points front Abba also drew level with The Bee Gees at the top of the list with 2,701 points. Exile became the 76th act to reach at least 500 points as their total ticked over to 510.
