This week we saw the 230th different number 1 since the charts started as Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)’ too over at 1 from Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’. The latter had been at 1 for 5 weeks. It had taken ‘Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)’ just 3 weeks to get to 1 and this was the 20th song to manage this. There had been 3 songs so far that got to 1 in their second week on the chart (this excludes songs on the very first chart). ‘Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)’ had topped the charts in both the UK and the US and was the 19th song to top those 2 charts as well as ours. 12 of those 19 had been by US acts while only 5 had been by British acts. Terry Jack’s ‘Seasons In The Sun’ and Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’ had been the only ones from other nations to do so with Jacks being from Canada and Abba from Sweden.

The climber of the week award was shared between The Buggles’ ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ and Rocky Burnette’s ‘Tired Of Toeing The Line’ which both climbed 5 to land at 6 and 13 respectively. ‘Tired Of Toeing The Line’ had the honour of being the 1,000th song to pick up the award if one starts at the top of the chart and works ones way down in awarding the award. There were no other star raters this week.

‘This Is Your Lucky Day (The Girl Won’t Get Under)’ by Alan Price and Crystal Gayle’s ‘Half The Way’ were the fallers with both songs dropping 5 to land at 17 and 20 respectively.

Suzi Quatro’s ‘She’s In Love With You’ spent its 16th week in the charts and enjoyed its second week as the oldest in the top 20.

Supertramp’s ‘Breakfast in America’ was the only song to leave the top 20 this week. It had seen a run of 9 weeks and a peak of 9 which was the worst performance on both the weeks and peak front for their 3 hits to date. It was the 52nd song so far to see its peak equal its week figure. 9 was proving by far the most popular number to have an equal weeks and peak with as it had now happened 16 times. The next highest was 8 which had seen 12 times. Supertramp still had 1 more hit to come.

The new one was Captain & Tennille’s 3rd hit on our charts, ‘Do That to Me One More Time’. The song would knock Michael Jackson’s ‘Rock With You’ off the top spot of the US charts but would only sit there for 1 week as it was dethroned by Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ the following week. The previous 2 hits on our charts for Captain & Tennille had been written by Howard Greenfield and Neil Sedaka, but this one was written by Toni Tennille. Apart from its US success, it would get to 7 in the UK, 1 in Belgium, 2 in Holland and 5 in New Zealand. It would top the charts in neighbouring Zimbabwe. ‘Do That To Me One More Time’ would be Captain & Tennille’s last major hit in the US. They did manage to hit the Hot 100 with 2 more songs, but neither made it into the top 50.

Chilly became the 4th act from Germany to manage to see their total weeks count reach 20. The other 3 to mange this so far were Michael Holm, Peter Maffay and Freddy Breck.

With the new entry this week being a US chart topper, we now had 8 songs in the top 20 that had made it to the top of the UK, the US or both charts. This was 1 off the record of 9 that we had seen so far.
