Kim Wilde’s ‘Kids In America’ only lasted 1 week at the top of the charts as this week Kim Carnes’ ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ recaptured the number 1 spot. This was the 9th time a solo woman had taken over the top spot from another solo woman and it gave us the 20th week overall and a record equalling 4th consecutive week with the top 2 songs being by solo women. Kim Wilde’s other hit, ‘Chequered Love’ moved into the top 5 from 7 last week and she became the 8th act and the first woman to have 2 hits in the top 5 in the same week. The previous acts to manage this were Chris Andrews, The Hollies, Four Jacks & A Jill, The Sweet, Wings, Pussycat and The Bee Gees with The Bee Gees being the only act to manage 3 in the top 5.

David Kramer’s ‘Hak Hom Blokkies’ took the climber of the week award with a 7 place jump from 19 to 12. Kramer was the first local solo male act to take the award since Anton Goosen managed it with ‘Kruidjie-Roer-My-Nie’ in the May of 1979. The only other star rater this week was Smokey Robinson’s ‘Being With You’ which moved up 5 from 18 to 13.

Having waited 47 weeks before getting his first biggest faller award, Albert Hammond now made it 2 in 2 weeks as ‘When I’m Gone’ took the award again with an 8 place drop from 11 to 19. It shared the award with Eddy Grant’s ‘Do You Feel My Love’ which dropped from 12 to 20. ‘Do You Feel My Love’ was the oldest on the charts, enjoying its 13th week with us and its 4th as the oldest.

There was only 1 song leaving the charts this week and this was Phil Collins’ ‘In The Air Tonight’ which managed a run of 11 weeks and peaked at 2. There would be more to come from the Genesis drummer both as part of the group and as a solo artist.

The new entry was ‘It’s Hard To be Humble’, Mac Davis’ 2nd hit as an artist (he had seen success as a song writer too). Davis’ previous hit, ‘Tequila Sheila’ was still in the charts (at number 9) and he became the 70th act to see 2 or more hits in the chart in the same week. ‘It’s Hard To be Humble’ was written by Davis, giving him his 4th hit as a song writer, and it would go to number 43 on the US Hot 100 chart. It would also go to 9 in Australia, 14 in Canada and 3 in New Zealand. All this chart action was in 1980 and in that same year a band called Stout took a cover to 18 in Ireland and 27 in the UK.

Both Adam & The Ants and Peach celebrated reaching the 20 weeks in the charts milestone while Joe Dolan became the 15th act to reach a century of weeks. He was the 3rd act from the non-big 3 nations to make this landmark total with Sweden’s Abba on 224 and Boney M (who could be Jamaican or German) on 108 above him.
