Real name: Wanda Teresa Arletowicz von Zelinska
Wanda (sometimes spelt Vanda) was born in Hackney in England. Her parents were polish immigrants and in 1960 they moved down to South Africa where her father, Ali Arletowicz, was a well-known entertainer in the Johannesburg area. Wanda formed a vocal trio with 2 of her friends and recorded an album called ‘Going Your Way’ under the name The Girlfriends. After The Girlfriends broke up, Wanda continued to perform and record. In 1969 she joined the Staccatos for a short stint and ended up marrying the band’s guitarist, Richard Crouse. The couple moved to England in 1972 and soon afterwards, Wanda changed her professional name to Bobbie McGee (sometimes going under Bobbie Fuzzy McGhee). She would sing backing vocals on albums by Arthur Brown (who had the hit ‘Fire’ under the name The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown) and Mike Chapman who would be one of the most successful songwriters in terms of SA chart hits.
