After leaving school he went to work on one of the copper mines in Zambia. He would go on to serve in the Rhodesian army where he formed a band called the Bushcats Skiffle Group. After his army stint he moved to South Africa where he formed the New Trends with Stevie van Kerken (who would go on to marry producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange) and Alan Goodwin. After this he would pursue a successful career as a solo artist and as a producer.
