ANDY GIBB (UK)

Born: 5 March 1958
Died: 10 March 1988 (aged 30)
Real name:  Andrew Roy Gibb

Andy was born in Stretford in Lancashire, England in the same hospital that Joy Division’s Ian Curtis was born and the same town that the painter L.S. Lowry (who was the subject of Brian And Michael’s hit, ‘Pictures Of Matchstalk Cats And Dogs’) was born. Andy was the youngest brother of Barry, Maurice and Robin from the Bee Gees. He would quit school aged 13 and started playing in clubs in Ibiza in Spain where he was living with his parents at the time and then later on the Isle Of Man when they moved there. He would also have a stint in Australia after brother Barry suggested he try start a career there as that is where The Bee Gees had cut their teeth. However, he would not find the same success that his brothers had found down under, although he did see a minor hit with ‘Words And Music’ which made it to 78 in Australia and 29 in New Zealand. He then moved to Hollywood with his wife. They soon divorced, but Andy would eventually get his music career off the ground with ‘I Just Want To Be Your Everything’ which brother Barry had written. The song would top the US charts for 4 weeks. His next 2 hits, ‘Love Is Thicker Than Water’ and ‘Shadow Dancing’ would also go to number 1. ‘Love Is Thicker Than Water’ would knock his brother’s ‘Stayin’ Alive’ off the top spot only to be dislodged after 2 weeks by The Bee Gees’ ‘Night Fever’. He would see a total of 10 US hits but would not get to number 1 again. In the UK he only managed 4 hits with a best peak of 10 by ‘An Everlasting Love’. In the early 80’s he would have a relationship with Victoria Principal who was enjoying success as Pamela Ewing in the TV series ‘Dallas’. Throughout his career he would battle with cocaine addiction and just after his 30th birthday he died from myocarditis, a heart condition caused by his addiction.
