LULU (UK)

Born: 3 November 1948
Real name: Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie (aka Lulu Kennedy-Cairns)

Lulu was born in Lennoxtown, a small town about 13 miles north of Glasgow in Scotland. She was only 12 or 13 when she and her manager approached a band called the Bellrocks to see if she could sing with them. Soon after this she took on the name Lulu after someone commented that she was a real lulu of a girl. Lulu was slang at the time for remarkable. She was only 15 when she signed for Decca records and recorded ‘Shout’ with backing band The Luvvers. The song went to number 7 in the UK and 94 in the US. A string of hits would follow and she would star in the film ‘To Sir With Love’ opposite Sidney Poitier. She would represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 with the song ‘Boom Bang-A-Bang’ which would come tied 1st with 3 other songs. She would also sing the theme tune to the 1974 Bond film, ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’. In total she has seen 29 UK chart hits, getting to number 1 once with ‘Relight My Fire’ which was a duet with boy band Take That. At the time of writing, she had the 4th longest wait for a number 1 hit in the UK taking her 29 years, 4 months and 15 days from seeing her first hit chart till when she hit the top spot. The record was Robin Gibb (as a solo act) who took 39 years, 8 months 9 days. She has only managed 9 US hits with ‘To Sir With Love’ being her only chart topper.
