THE TROGGS (UK)

The band hailed from the town of Andover in Hampshire, England which is about 120 kms west of London. The founding members were Reg Presley and Ronnie Bond who had been in school together. Early on they called themselves The Troglodytes, but soon shortened it to The Troggs. In 1965 they were signed by The Kinks’ manager, Larry Page who arranged for their debut single, ‘Lost Girl’ to be released on CBS records. Other than getting to 16 in Sweden, the song did very little else. However, their follow up, ‘Wild Thing’, would be a major hit, getting to 2 in the UK and topping the charts in the US. They would go on to see a total of 10 UK hits, reaching the top spot with ‘With A Girl Like You’ and 4 US hot 100 hits, but no further chart toppers there. One of their hits, ‘Love Is All Around’, was covered by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 and used in the film ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’ which starred Hugh Grant. The Wet Wet Wet version would top the UK charts for 15 weeks, the 3rd best weeks at 1 for any song at that time. The Troggs version would peak at 5.

The Troggs would be the 9th act to clock up 10 hits but were the second to get to 100 weeks (after Tom Jones). They would be the 3rd act to reach 10 weeks at 1 (beaten by Tom Jones and The Bee Gees).
