The song was written by Irving Berlin in 1927 and first published in 1929. In 1930 it was used in a musical film of the same title which starred Harry Richman. Around the same time Fred Astaire would also record a version. The song title comes from the slang ‘to put on the Ritz’ which meant to dress up smartly. Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle would perform a version of it in the 1974 film ‘Young Frankenstein’. Taco’s version would shift over a million copies in the US.
