Songwriter Lee Hazlewood was inspired by a line Frank Sinatra had in the 1963 film ‘4 For Texas’ where he said, ‘They tell me them boots ain’t built for walkin’.’ Hazlewood initially planned to record the song himself, but Frank Sinatra talked him into getting Nancy to sing it. The song has been used in a number of box office hit movies including 1987’s ‘Full Metal Jacket’ and 1997’s ‘Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery’. Juliette Lewis would sing a version of it in the film ‘Natural Born Killers’. Sinatra’s version would be the 1st of 23 hits to get to number 1 in its 3rd week on the chart (a record at that time). This excludes those songs on the very first chart. Subsequently 3 songs would manage it in 2 weeks.
