The song originally appeared as the b-side of the ‘So Far Away’ single which was released in advance of the band’s highly successful album, ‘Brothers In Arms’. The reason for this was that Mark Knopfler did not think it was good enough for the album and saw it only as a b-side. The band’s manager heard it and thought otherwise. Both tracks would appear on the album and ‘Walk Of Life’ would subsequently be released as a single. It was denied the top spot on our charts by Falco’s ‘Rock Me Amadeus’. In the UK it was A-ha’s ‘The Sun Always Shines On T.V.’ that kept it off the top spot and it would share the band’s best showing on the UK charts (peak of 2) with their 1982 hit ‘Private Investigations’.
