Diamond has given different stories about who the Caroline in the song was. Initially he said that it was John F. Kennedy’s daughter Caroline while later he has been noted as saying it was about his then wife Marcia, but her name didn’t fit with the rhythm of the song, so he changed it to Caroline. It would rank tied 14th out of the 20 SA chart hits that Diamond had a hand in writing (top 20 points basis).
