The song was a cover of a 1971 hit by Canadian band The Stampeders. Their version would top the charts in Canada and get to 8 in the US. The song would win the Juno Award for Best Single and Dodson would win the songwriter award for it. The Junos are awarded by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to recognize outstanding achievements in Canada’s music industry. The Miracles were a South African band, not the US one that Smokey Robinson was a member of.
